"The Harris family of English descent, came to Fauquier County, Virginia. George Harris fought in the Revolutionary War with the 11th Virginia Regiment at Valley Forge; for this service he received $6 2/3 monthly. He and his wife, Catharine, moved to Warren County, Georgia where his will was probated in 1821.
The George Harrises had ten children: One of these, Samuel Clickett, was the father of William and Isaac, who married two Alsobrook sisters, Harriett and Provena respectively. The two families came to Houston County in 1836. William and Harriett had 11 children: Samuel Warren Jones John Hardiman George Amos Sarah Jane William Greene Isaac Coldman Mary Elizabeth Henry Clickett Martha Adelaide James Taylor
According to payrolls and muster rolls, George Harris, from Fauquier Co., Va., enlisted on 1 Feb 1777 as a private in Col. Daniel Morgan's 11th Virginia Regiment. He served in Capt/ Charles Porterfield's company near Morristown, New Jersery, and at Valley Forge at least through March 1778.
Family tradition has it that George Harris moved with his family from Virginia possibly via the Carolinas, to Warren Co., Ga. In 1792 he received a State of Georgia land grant of 200 A in Washington Co., and in 1793, 30 A in Wilkes Co. Tax disgusts show that he paid taxes in 1794 on 361 A in Warren Co., and in 1818 on 461 A in Warren Co., 83 A in Wilkes Co., and 492 A in Wayne Co., The will of George Harris was probated in 1821, and it is assumed that he was buried in the Harris-McGinty family cemetery on the Harris property.
The war service of George Harris is further substantiated by a State of Ga. land lottery grant to Catharine Harris, identified as the widow of George Harris (RS) Warren Co. She received 202 1/2 A in Muscogee Co., Ga. in the 1827 lottery. Documents: Payroll dated 1 May 1777 & muster roll for Feb. 1778 of Caaapt. Chas.
