Biography

George Goff Hatfield, Sr., was born about 1715 in Virginia. He was one of the early pioneers that settled the area along the Clinch River in southwest Virginia. Records do not reveal the names of his parents or wife. There are four known sons. There is a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren and their children.

George can be found only a few times in the official records. He appears first on the 1771 list of tithables for Boteourt County, VA, and later on Robert Doach's muster list of the Clinch River area. George and Jeremiah also appear on this muster list. They are identified as the sons of George Hatfield, Sr. Early land surveys made on December 6, 1774 in Fincastle Co., VA place George, Jr. and Jeremiah on the North Fork of the Holston River. It is believed that George, Sr. lived somewhere in the same area, maybe on this land, but did not file a survey. Some researchers identify George, Sr. as the George obtaining this survey but some say it was George, Jr.

Later land records how George, Jr. and Sarah Hatfield deeding land to their son, Abner Hatfield. This was on November 28, 1890, and the land was on Lick Branch, Lee Co., VA. Abner sold this same land in 1818.

He died after 1795 in Mount Olive, Lee County, Kentucky, USA.

On 28 Nov 1809, George Hatfield, Jr. and his wife Sarah, deeded land on Lick Branch in Lee County, Virginia, USA to their son, Abner Hatfield. [4]

Abner Hatfield sold this land in 1818.

Research Notes

It was once believed that this George "Goff" Hatfield was the son of Abraham George Hatfield, Sr. and Margaret Winas of the "Matthias Hatfield of New Jersey" line, however DNA has since proved that the 2 lines are separate and distinct.

Goff was not a middle name. It was a way to identify 2 different men of the same name, "George Hatfield", who lived in the same area. There is one instance (with image), of the term "Gof" that was crossed out by the clerk, which was in an 1809 deed, and therfore must be for George Hatfield, Jr.

There have been multiple suggestions as to his wife, but the following 3 have been disproven ...

  • - Margaret Winans
  • - Margaret Logan, daughter of John Logan, a Mingo Indian Chief
  • - Martha "Marthy" Thoms=Toms, daughter of Foster Toms, a known Quaker.
  • In other documents, his wife was identified as Margaret (unknown, b: c1720 Russell Co, VA). [5]
