- Obituary: Taranaki Hearld - 4th Feb 1902
Mr G Herbert, who died at the hospital on Saturday, February
1st, after a long and painful illness, was another of the now
fast decreasing band of pioneer settlers of Taranaki.
Sixty-six years of age at his death, he had lived for over
fifty years in the Province, having come out here as a lad in
1850. He served in the Royal Engineers all through the Maori
Wars, and saw most of the chief engagements. He was sergeant
in chargeof Engineers when the redoubt was built on Marsland
Hill, and was also for some time Barrack master. On receiving
his discharge, he took up land and remained in the district
till his death. For some time, his home has been in Kent Rd.
The late Mr G H Herbert was born on the Isle of Wright. He
joined the Royal Engineers' Band at Woolwich when 14 years of
age, and volunteered for New Zealand the following year. He
came out in the troopship "Lord William Bentinck" in 1850,
and was stationed at Auckland, Wellington and Taranaki during
the "fifties". Hehad charge of the work when Marsland Hill
was reduced and the barracks built. He was here through the
war as corporal in charge of works - road making, redoubt
building, etc., and was present at most of the engagements
fought. He got slightly wounded at Mahoetahi. During the
truce, he started a music class at which several of our
present citzens were pupils. After the war, he was in
business at the corner of Dawson and Bulteel Streets, which
business he carried on for several years. He was Barrack
master for two years during the free immigration. He went out
to his land at Kent Rd in 1878, where he has resided ever
since. He married a daughter of Mr Job Wills.
