Art Hillman has extracted the following news report from the New Orleans 'Daily Picayune' dated October 10, 1866:
The following additional particulars of the less of the "Evening Star" are from the Savannah News of this morning, and contain the latest particulars of the disaster. The list of passengers was published in the New York Times of September 30.
The steamer Evening Star, Capt. Knapp, sailed from New York for New Orleans September 29th at 3 o'clock and encountered a severe gale 2 o'clock on the afternoon of the 3rd, 180 miles east of Tybee Island. After weathering the storm seventeen hours, she foundered at 6 o'clock on the morning of the 4th, with 270 souls on board, only seventeen of whom are known to have been saved.
