With his mother and younger brother William he left Southhampton in the ship "Sabrina" on 24th January 1857 and arrived in Melbourne on 13th April 1857
Oral history handed down in the family tells us that as soon George left schoool he began work as an apprentice draughtsman in the Railway workshops at Newport, Vic. Australia. He became a tester of locomotives and drove them within the railway yards at the Workshops. He was never allowed to drive outside the yards because he was colour-blind and could not be relied on to correctly read the signals. In the mid 187-'s George's home address was 6 Alma Tce Williamstown Vic. That stret is only 500mtr from his place of employment in the workshops
