https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/13169208/george-huntington
George came to this area about 1792 and in the spring of 1793 set up a stock of merchandise in John Barnard's tavern, one of the few buildings in Rome at that time. He was the first merchant in what later became known as Rome, New York. In 1794 he built a house and later became an extensive land owner in the vicinity.
When Rome was organized as a town in 1796, George was elected the first Supervisor of the town, and also held that position in 1804, 1814 and 1817. In 1810 he was elected to the New York State Assembly, and again in 1818 thru 1821. In 1812 he was elected Lieutenant Governor on the War Ticket.
