Married at Fort William (Calcutta/Kolkata) as 'George Irvis', 31 May 1800-- info from http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/
Year and day of month of marriage confirmed by Thiessen Family Tree. Same info at http://www.familysearch.org (plus alt. spelling 'George Javis'.
British Library India Office (Bengal Annual Muster Lists - IOR L/MIL/10/136) records show he was either a Serjeant or Serjeant-Major (both listed) in the 6th Native Regiment, was from Ireland, and arrived at the Bengal Presidency in 1796 in the ship "Kings Service".
Upon the death of thier parents the Irwin Children, John and Sophia, may then have been sent to Scotland, where they were under the guardianship of Mr. Morrison of "Hall and Morrison Solicitors, the Executors of John " solicitors, the executors of John Hyde's Estate. It is believed that "Hall and Morrison" misappropriated their money. John and Sophia Irwin had a Foster Sister, Margaret Denny in Scotland who was probably a family connection of Captain Irwin.
