Obituary:

Old Citizen Dies
Garland, Texas, September 21, 1923

George W. James, one of the oldest settlers of this community, died at his home, Cedarcroft, west of Town, last Friday morning at one o'clock, following a long illness. Mr. James had been in poor health the past several years, and for the past few weeks had been bedridden. Up to that time he had kept going, showing his usual interest in his home and keeping it in order as for the past fifty years.

As stated by his pastor in the funeral service, Mr. James took great pride in his home, and kept one of the most beautiful places in the country.

Mr. James was born in Jasper county, Missouri on September 24, 1846. He came to Texas in 1865, settling five miles north of Dallas where he lived until 1868, when he moved to old Duck Creek. He moved to the place where the family now resides in 1875, having lived in the same house for forty-eight years. The home is now the oldest residence in what was formerly known as the town of Duck Creek. He was married to Marth C. Jones on December 29, 1870.

He was converted in 1867 under the preaching of Evangelist W. W. Harris by whom he was also baptized, joining the Pleasant View Baptist church. He put his membership in the Garland Baptist Church the year of its organization, but was not a charter member.

Mr. James enlisted in the Confederate Army on his eighteenth birthday and served through the entire war. He belonged to the first Missouri Calvary, Gen Cooper's Brigade, Company E., Capt. Warren. Mr. James was a member of the Baptist church since 1867.

Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Kate James, one brother, J. M. James; two children, a son, Horace, and one daughter, Mrs. Lottie Watson; six grandchildren and there great-grandchildren.

In the death of this good citizen, Garland loses another of those old pioneers who worked and struggled to make this the ideal country to live in. Mr. James was an upright, honorable citizen, and held the respect of all he had any dealings with. His passing severed another link which connects the pioneer days with the present, and shortly the men who developed the greatest country on earth will have passed away, but they leave a heritage which will preserve their memory as long as time lasts.

John H. Cullum, who was intimately associated with Mr. James in church and civic works for a number of years pays him a tribute in another column.

Funeral services were conducted at the home Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Pastor Caraway of the Baptist church, and internment followed in the family plot in the Masonic Cemetery. A large crowd was present to show respect to his memory.

Those here from out of town for the services were: Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Jones of Valley View; R. B. Jones of Hedley; Mrs. Lou Hustead of Duncanville; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lakey of Denton; H. T. Wileher, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Wright, Mrs. Harry Childress, and Mrs. A. Y Wileher and Mrs. T. J. Green of Plano; E. S. Dice and miss Electra Dice of Vickery; Hatton W. Sumners of Washing, D.
