Family tombstone of GEORGE MARCHANT IN FRESHFORD,UK. On a flat paving tombstone east of the porch to St Peter's Church, Freshford is inscribed the following text, copied by Geoffrey Marchant Harrison on 9/7/1979 ; "Sacred to the memory of George Marchant, who departed this life January 6th 1837, aged 79. Also Sarah, wife of the above, died January 22nd 1849 aged 88. Also Mary Ann daughter of the above died February 26th 1833 aged 36. Also, Jane Lewis daughter of the above died October 11th 1837 aged 46. Also, William Lavington Marchant son of the above died August 10th 1840 aged 40. {in Australia} Also Kathleen Mayo daughter of the above November 29th 1840 aged 58. Also James son of the above died September 21st 1856 aged 69.Also Elizabeth Hazell daughter of the above died December 23rd 1858 aged 69. Also Joseph, son of above died January 15th 1859 aged 75. Also Susannah Broad daughter of the above died October 31st 1865 aged 84." Some of these members of the family were Methodists rather than Anglicans, but perhaps i am quite wrong. The Marchant tree prepared by the College of Arms for Arthur Noel Marchant (born 1911) of West Australia & Lt. Col. Geoffrey Marchant of South Africa uses an abbreviation M. I, which I have taken to mean Memorial Inscription or {Monumental inscription}outside St Peter's Church , Freshford, Somerset, England.
