The son of Simon and Julianna (Harman) Jury, in 1860 he was a clerk living on the family farm in Buffalo Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5'8" tall and had dark hair and black eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 20, 1861, mustered into federal service there August 31 as a private with Co.D, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged at term's end September 19, 1864, at Berryville, Frederick County, Virginia.
He married Anna Gish on September 12, 1865, in Liverpool, Perry County, and fathered Jacob U. (born 06/03 1866), John (b. 1867), Benjamin Franklin (b. 04/20/1869), Salome (b.04/08/1871), Elizabeth R. (b.03/18/1873-married Henry Lenhard), Mary Ellen (b. 03/18/1876-married Luther Slausen Nolf), Henry P.( 1878 d. 1880), and George Gilbert (b. 01/26/1886-married Alice May Frymire). By 1880, he had moved his family to Dickinson County, Kansas.
