About George Hancock Kennerly

Son of Samuel and Mary Talbot (Hancock) Kennerly. As a lieutenant in the War of 1812, he carried the American flag and terms of surrender to the British at Prairie de Chien, July 20, 1814. He was a trader and businessman in St. Louis. In 1828, he also became postmaster at Jefferson Barracks, near St. Louis, Missouri, and during the Mexican War he served in the capacity of Captain as its Assistant Quartermaster. He was married to Alziere Menard, daughter of Canadian Pierre Menard, the first lieutenant governor of Illinois. They had ten children, three of whom fought (and one died) for the C.S.A. in the Civil War.
