About George Lavenson
1st Lt George Lavenson was with Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army during World War II.
He was married soon before he shipped off to England. His wife did not remarry for many years, but was a major volunteer for the Red Cross.
Lavenson was wounded right before the battle of Carentan (10 and 15 June 1944). Flying back to the United States, the Red Cross hospital plane he and 21 others were on was shot down, somewhere off the coast of Nova Scotia, probably by a German U-boat that had a habit of sending SOS signals, then shooting planes that would fly low to see if they could help.
