209. George^ Loring (Joseph'% Benjamin^^ Thomas^, John'-, Thomas^), born at Hingham November 18, 1771; married at the church of El Sagrario in Malaga, Spain, July 31, 1817, Maria del Rosario, daughter of Mr. Ignatius Anthony Oyarzabal and Mrs. Josephine Herera, his wife, of the citv of Cadiz.

He entered Harvard College but, disliking a literary career, left, and was apprenticed to a cooper. Followed the sea a few years and became a captain. Settled at Malaga, Spain, where he became one of the most promi- nent and wealthy merchants, dealing in wines and fruits. Was the pioneer of American commerce with Malaga, the first shipper of raisins from that port to this country. He was also a banker, agent of Baring Brothers, of London. Was honored especially by the poor, to whom he was very benevolent. He died August 14, 1843, leaving an estate of more than 8300,000 to his family and to charities.

His will was proved in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, as Mr. Loring always maintained his standing in Spain as a foreign resident, and a copy is on file (a translation from

the original Spanish). It was dated June 20, 1842, and proved in Malaga the day after his decease; presented here September 16, 1844. The will narrates that he was a native of Hingham, Massachusetts; mentions his parents; tells his wife's full name and those of her parents; gives the names of three children who had died in infancy and the seven then surviving. A certain sum of money settled upon his wife before their marriage. Sons edu- cated in the United States, the cost of their education not to be deducted from their portions. Bequeaths to his wife; to her mother; to his brother-in-law, Mr. John Oyarzabal; to his sister, Mrs. Lydia Loring Walker; to his clerk, Mr. John Astula; to the overseer of his stores, Mr. John Herera and John's brother, Francis Herera; to his children, his wife being guardian of those in their minority. His wife, his brother-in-law, Mr. John Oyar- zabal, and Mr. Emanuel Enriquez executors. The will was presented here by his son, Joseph George Loring, and his brother-in-law, John Oyarzabal, they being partners in the business which Mr. George Loring had placed in their hands as his successors. The will contains many expressions of religious sentiment, and bequests to churches and ecclesiastics and the poor.
