George Arthur Mackey

George was in the merchant navy after he completed school. During the war he was on convoys in the Mediterranian Sea, particularly between Malta and Tunisia. His ship was hit by a Dornia bomber in 1943 and sank just off Malta. He had to swim ashore. After the war he coninued in the merchant navy for a few years before working at the Leeds post office. He met Rose Byne, who was in the WAFFS in 1945 on Helgoland and they married in December 1946. George and Rose had three children in Leeds. In 1962 Roses brother Claude Edward Byrne's wife died and he was unable to look after her three children from a previous mariage. George and Rose emmigrated to Australia as 10 pound migrants to help look after Lindsay, Peter and Ann. The Mackey family arrived in Sydney in April 1963 and moved in with Claude Edward and his adopted family in Wollongong. Peter was old enough to leave home and soon did and Ann followed shortly after that. Lindsay was the same age as Heather and lived with the Mackeys until they moved to Western Australia in 1968. During this time in Wollongong George worked in clerical positions with BHP at the Port Kembla Steel Works. The family went on holiday in December 1967 to Western Australia. Claude Edmond left earlier with Heather and George and Rose, Sandra and David drove across the Nullabour in their Austin 1800. They like Perth very much and decided to stay. Leaving Sandra and David with a friend, they went back to Wollongong with Heahter and sold their house and moved the furniture to Perth. George found work in Fremantle with Fremantle port authoities steevendoring, where he worked on staff rosters allocating warf labour. The family moved a number of times over the next few years eventually getting public housing in Langford, which they took out a mortgage on. George became ill shortly after moving there (1972) and died in 1973.
