About George Maides
Back page article of Croydon Advertiser - Saturday August 31st, 1912
DEATH OF AN OLD CROYDON RESIDENT
THE LATE MR. GEORGE MAIDES
It is with great regret that we have to record the death of Mr. George Maides, of The Homestead, Morland-road, Croydon, and partner in the well known firm of Maides and Harper, builders of Albert-road, Croydon. Mr. Maides, who was esteemed and respected by all who came into contact with him passed away on Friday in last week with painful suddenness. Only five days before he was apparently quite well, and he and his family had recently returned from their summer holiday in Scotland. On the Monday, however, he was taken ill, and despite the best of medical aid, including that of Sir Douglas Powell, he passed away on the following Friday.
The late Mr. Maides who was 67 years of age, had resided in Croydon for over 40 years, and for upwards of 33 years had been in business as a partner in the firm of Maides & Harper. He was a distinguished Freemason, being a member of the East Surrey Lodge of Concord, and was also on the local committee of the National Service League, a body in which he took great interest. For many years he had been a regular attendant at Holy Trinity Congregational Church, where for over 20 years he filled the office of deacon. Generally speaking, the late Mr. Maides never sought after public life, but preferred doing his work in a quiet and unostentatious manner.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the body being interred at Queen's Road cemetery. Prior to the interment a private service was held at The Homestead, the officiating clergy being the Revs. R.G. Davies and F. Vaughan Bishop. At the graveside there were many people gathered because in addition to the deceased's relatives, all the employees from Maides & Harper attended, and some men formerly employed at Croydon, came from other parts. Ever a considerate and kind employer, a courteous gentleman and a true friend, the late Mr. George Maides will be missed by a wide circle.
