About George White Marston
George was founder of what became one of San Diego's favorite department stores. Eventually, the store was acquired by Federated Department Stores, and was operated as a branch of the Broadway chain. Among many other things, George was founder and first president of the San Diego Historical Society. His house, an Arts and Crafts Mansion, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is owned by the city; open to the public; and located in Balboa Park. The 1930 census lists his occupation as proprietor, merchantile co. 1930 U.S. Census [age 79]. George White Marston (October 22, 1850 – May 31, 1946) was an American politician, department store owner and philanthropist.
Marston was involved with establishing Balboa Park, the San Diego Public Library System, and the Serra Museum.
His contributions to San Diego earned him the affectionate title of "San Diego's First Citizen."
