George was the son of Adam and Elizabeth McKee. He probably came to the United States with his parents shortly after 1790.
He was at Bellefonte, Centre County, PA in 1795 listed as a taxpayer on Buffalo Run. On 1 Nov 1798 he married Elizabeth Gregg in Carlisle, PA. She died eight days after giving birth to their only child, John Gregg McKee. On 23 May 1805 George married Rebecca Parks Riddle in Harris Twp., Centre, PA. George and Rebecca had nine children: Robert, Eleanor, Adam, George, Samuel, Elizabeth, William, Sarah and Rebecca.
George built a very substantial stone tavern in 1797 in Bellefonte. This tavern later passed to his brother John. George developed a tannery near the tavern.
In 1814 George purchased 440 acres in Greenfield Twp, Bedford County (now Blair) PA. This area became known as McKee's Gap. The land was a natural gateway between the rich farmland to the south and eats and the Juniata River headwaters where Hollidaysburg was established.
