First Superintendent of Austintown Schools Austintown Leader, Wed, 17 Apr 1974 Excerpt from Anniversary and Historical Edition Commemorating Austintown's 176th Anniversary "As for superintendents in the Austintown schools, in 1896, the old Board of Directors hired G.O. Neff as a teacher for one of the one-room schoolhouses and also appointed him "supervisor of schools". Three months into the school year, Neff resigned because he lacked the authority to force teachers to attend meetings he scheduled and to follow his requests. The Board refused to accept his resignation and granted him the proper authority. Still dissatisfied, on April 19, 1897, Neff attended a meeting of the Board and accused the directors of interfering with his work. He recommended that a high school he established in Austintown that the Board provide more equipment for the schools, and that teachers in the Austintown schools be permitted to visit other school systems in order to learn new techniques of teaching. The Board listened patiently to his recommendation then voted to dispense with his service at the end of the school year. It was not until 1908 when the Rev. W.H. Thompson was hired as superintendent of township schools that the Board decided that supervision was needed."
