About George W Patterson
In 1884, George and Millar purchased a hardware business in Wyoming, Illinois, which they named "The Patterson Brothers." The next year, the heirs of William A. Patterson sold for $400, the 100 acres of land in Lehman Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The deed was signed by Charles N. Patterson, Ellen Patterson, Mary E. Shaner, formerly Mary E. Patterson, George Patterson, "Susan" Ann Patterson and Millar Patterson, but not Melvin Burton Patterson.
In 1887, Millar was killed in a train wreck at Chatsworth, Illinois, enroute to Niagra Falls. Camilla (Packard) Patterson, Millar's widow, sold her half of the business to Burt who had been training as a teacher. The next year, Burt gave his mother a Seth Thomas Kitchen Clock from the Patterson Brothers because she did not like alarm clocks. This clock has been a cherished possession in my home even though it has never kept time in my memory.
From unpublished manuscript by Ellen Maring Benedict.
