About George Pearce
Obituary.
Evening Post. 11 September, 1920.
Constable George Pearce died at his residence, Brooklyn, on Thursday night, aged 64. He was a good representative of that kind of policeman who is usually "guide, philosopher and friend" to all in his district. Of his 26 years in the force he spent 14 at Brooklyn, where he was greatly respected for his tact, courtesy, and many little acts of kindness which he did, and the success of his efforts as peacemaker. He was friendly with all the law-abiding with whom he came in contact. The late Constable Pearce was a native of Onehunga, and before joining the force spent some years at sea. He leaves a widow and two sons - Messrs George Pearce (Nelson) and William Pearce (Wellington), and two daughters - Mrs. Strawbridge (Wanganui) and Mrs. St.Clair (Gisborne). The Rev. Father Murphy celebrated Requiem Mass at the Church, and the Rev. Father Mahoney, assisted by Dean Holley, officiated at the graveside. Among those who attended the funeral were the Commisioner of Police (Mr. J. O'Donovan), Superintendant Norwood, Inspector Broberg, and Senior-Sargeant Gaffney. The chief mourners were the two sons, Mr. John Pearce, of Onehunga (the deceased's eldest brother), and Mr. Strawbridge (son-in-law).
