About George Pepper

Businessman. Starting out apprenticing in an accounting firm as a young man, he displayed great business acumen, and would rise to be one of the wealthiest merchants and landholders in Philadelphia, as well as one of the more successful early brewers in the city. He owned several residences, with his summer home, "Fairy Hill", situated on land that eventually became part of Laurel Hill Cemetery.

He married Mary Catherine Seckel, daughter of Maria Guier Seckel and John David Seckel (who himself was one of Philadelphia's largest landholders during his time). They had 11 children, many whom used their inherited wealth to rise to prominence in business and education themselves.
