About George Pierce Phillips

George is supposedly the first Phillips in 12 generations not togo into the ministry. His father Edwin was the last not to break thetradition. George Phillips set up a hardware store (with financialassistance from a wealthy lumber man in Waco). The Phillips familylived in Abeline for a while and it was during this time that MaryEliza met Patrick Henry Carter. All Phillips were Presbyterians. Early in his manhood, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, and studiedlaw. He then returned to New Orleans, and moved with his mother, brother,and three sisters to Dallas, Texas in 1875. He remained in Dallas forseveral years, working for the firm of Leonard Brothers. He then movedto Sherman, Texas, where he was in the lumber business. He then movedto Wnitney and then to Abeline, which was in its infancy. Here hebecame a partner with William Cameron in a hardware store. He returnedto Dallas in 1893 and established a business as a manufacturer'sagent. The Phillips family resided at 444 Fairmount Ave. which hedescribed as the "dearest place to me on earth". He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Abeline, a KnightTemplar, a Knight of Phythias, and a Woodman of the World. NOTE: Brother A.L Phillips, & 2 sisters, Mrs. D.R. Fawcett (Dallas) &Mrs. P.H.
