Private, Company A, 7th Tennessee Cavalry, enlisted at Corinth, MS on 9/1/1863. Presumed captured with the regiment at Union City, TN on 3/24/1864, he was imprisoned at Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died in quarters on 6/14/1864 of chronic diarrhea. He seems to have been the son of John L and Mary Ann Bird Reed/Read and brother to John C Reed, also of Co A. The brothers died within 12 days of each other.

Family and WV state records show he was imprisoned by CSA, where he died and was buried. This is supported by the accounts of two neighbors who were also imprisoned there and survived. The POW camp was not Andersonville but another, name not known.

His son Solomon was also a Scout, but with Clay County.
