About George Claybourne Reed

Birth: Jun. 12, 1760 King William County Virginia, USA Death: May 15, 1855 Folsomville Warrick County Indiana, USA

While I have not seen any actual proof as to the parents of George Reed, it is believed by some that his father was Alfred Reed b.abt 1740 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, England. I have yet to prove or disprove this information.

In an effort to attempt to discover his paternal lineage, I am now focusing my attention on using DNA testing, from my Uncle Robert Reed, to attempt to turn up some leads in addition to researching Virginia and North Carolina records.

However, here is what is generally known and what I have researched about George Reed, my 3rd great grandfather.

At a very young age, George's father moved the family from King William, VA to North Carolina. I am not aware of any mention of siblings in any record I have researched thus far. I am still researching possible places he may have moved and possible names of those individuals.

George Reed was, however, living in Onslow Co., NC when he entered the Revolutionary War, where he served under Captain John McClamma, Major James Love, and Colonel Thomas Bloodworth. He served 73 days and was taken prisoner near Wilmington, later paroled by British Major Craig with the promise he would return home, not to fight, however, he returned home and then re-enlisted in the militia under Capt. Amos Love and Major Snead.

George was wounded while serving in the war, receiving two wounds from a bayonet, one to the side and 1 into the leg below the knee. It is this 2nd wound which gave him problems over the years and for which he attempted to receive a pension for, which was eventually rejected. It appears they did not give him days credit for the time he was a prisoner.

One can read the lengthy Pension Application as it is readily available with just a little searching on the internet.

After the War George returned to Onslow Co., NC, then, shortly after his father's death abt 1784, went with his mother to Charlotte Co., VA, living there about 10 years before moving on. This information comes form his own recorded testament to the judge when attempting to procure a pension. What is not known is whether his father moved the family to a different city prior to living in Onslow Co., NC. In 1786, Onlsow county courthouse was destroyed by a powerful storm, a hurricane, most likely, that hit the county, so all records were unfortunately destroyed.

After George settled with his mother in Virginia, he married Grace Rachel Utterbach abt 1790, most likely in Charlotte Co., VA. Grace was born abt 1770 in Maryland & d.abt 1830 in Warrick Co., IN.

From Virginia, George and his wife Rachel, as she was called, moved to Kentucky abt 1800 until abt 1814-1815. In the pension deposition, George stated he lived in Kentucky until abt 1815. I believe they lived in Stoner, Bourbon Co., KY, but other's may disagree.

The family first settled in Perry Co., IN sometime during 1814-1815. George is on the tax list for Perry Co., IN in Jun-July 1815.

By 1826, George was in Warrick Co., IN. I have an account where George Reed's residence in Warrick Co., was involved in a survey establishing two new townships in Warrick Co.

By 1830, Federal Census indicates he was in Skelton Twp, then by 1850,Federal Census indicates he was in Owen Twp, Warrick Co., IN, Folsomville being the mailing address, where he ended his days.

George and Rachel raised a very large family of at least 13 children, which I will attempt to list.

Note from this researcher: Alfred Reed, my g-g grandfather, while known to be a son of George Reed, could not be proven as a son by the researchers, Opal B. Phillips & Carrie Hart, at the time they wrote their Bicentennial Project, "They Came to Warrick County Indiana Volume III", which was published in cooperation with the local DAR.

My mother's sister Aunt Juanita (Reed) Frost interviewed her grandfather Ulyssis Grant Reed when he was still living and Grant stated to her, and she wrote it down, that he had met Alfred's brothers when they would visit in Missouri. They were Amer Reed and Maynard aka Minard/Minyard Reed, both recognized sons of George Reed.

On a DNA analysis recently performed on my mother's brother, Robert Grant Reed, he had a perfect Y-DNA match with a known male ancestor of Maynard aka Minard/Minyard Reed in the "Reed" Project on Family Tree DNA.

This was about the only way that I could find to prove this connection.
