About George Hall Reed

Obituary

George Hall Reed was born Aug. 29, 1915 in Taunton, Mass. His father, William Reed, was the editor and publisher of the Taunton Daily Gazette. George attended Harvard, graduating in 1938. In 1939, he married Louise S. Davis. They lived in Massachusetts and Connecticut until 1952 when they moved with their daughter, Sylvia, to Culver City, Calif., where George went to work for Hughes Aircraft Co. In 1952, George was transferred to Tucson, Ariz., where they lived until he retired.

George and Louise moved to Whidbey Island in 1977 and lived in Coupeville where George was active in the Lions, Meals on Wheels, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and he served on the Planning Commission. George loved to sing and he participated in a local theatrical group, providing his deep voice to the chorus. One of his favorite parts was as a nun in a chorus of nuns (all with beards).

Their home in Coupeville overlooked Penn Cove, and George worked in the yard, growing very lovely double begonias. When yard work and maintaining the home became too much, Louise and George moved to Oak Harbor where George continued his various community activities.

Even after two hip replacements on each hip curtailed some of his activities, George remained passionate about the work that is done by the Lions for the hearing and sight impaired. He was a reliable and dependable individual, who provided needed transportation from St. Stephen’s to Help House, with the weekly food donations until his failing sight forbade continuing to drive.

Never one to sit around, George became active in the Senior Center and was a stalwart card player, always available to play bridge, cribbage or pinochle. He was ever appreciative that his fellow card players would use the deck of cards that allowed him to see the “spots.” Because George never did anything without going full tilt, when he discovered bowling he was at one time involved in three bowling leagues in one season. Even when he was forced into using a walker, he continued to bowl and had a big day when he bowled a 200 game.

Storytelling was something George did well and often. His exacting nature and recall of events made those occasions in his life interesting and relevant in today’s world; he was liked by those who met him casually and loved by those who knew him well.

He will be interred at the St. Stephen’s Columbarium, along with his beloved wife and daughter, who predeceased him. He is survived by his brother Edward Reed of Waltham, Mass., and several great and great great grandneices and nephews who George never met but loved. His special girl, Avery, was born on George’s birthday three years ago.

Memorial Service will be celebrated by Father Paul Orritt at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. Reception will follow.

George would remind everyone to donate old eyeglasses and hearing aids to the Lions .
