About George L. Rockwell

George was born in New Haven in 1869 and lived with his uncle and aunt, Governor and Mrs. George Lounsbury at their estate, the Hickories, in Ridgefield, Connecticut. He worked at an other uncle's shoe factory in South Norwalk for 21 years, but he was drawn to politics. He ran for state representative in 1904 and 1937, and was a Connecticut delegate at the Repubilcan National Convention in 1904. In 1911, President Taft named him as US deputy consultate general in Montreal. He had a life long interest in Ridgefield history and geneaology and spent days wandering through the cemeteries in the area taking extensive notes. These would eventually be published in his book The History of Ridgefield published in 1928. He played trombone in the Ridgefield Men's Band and served as a gentleman farmer in the Farmingville section of town. His home was called Stepping Stones and was eventually purchased by Kingman Brewster, president of Yale University. In the early 1920's, he moved the family t the East Ridge section of Ridgefield and Winthrop Rockwell was their immediate neighbor. Win was first selectman of Ridgefield for decades.

He lost an enormous amount of money in poor investment decisions, caused partially by the Stock Market crash and the family moved from a 20+ room house to a 3 room care taker's cottage.

George was eventually named postmaster of the town. He was invited to Duquesne university to give a talk on Connecticut history and was presented with an honorary doctor of laws degree.
