---------------------------
From the New Holland Clarion, June 2, 1917:
"The latter part of last week our people were surprised to learn that one of our most prominent and most widely known citizens. George O. Roland, president of the New Holland National Bank, was critically ill with pneumonia and heart trouble, his illness having begun earlier in the week with a chill. The best medical skill and most careful nursing was rendered, and he made a heroic struggle to overcome his ailments, but without avail, and on Tuesday night about 11 o'clock he quietly sank to rest. George Oliver Roland was a son of the late Jonathan H. and Elizabeth Roland, and was born in the Roland homestead at Mill creek, Earl township, at Roland's, now better known as Hoober's or Ames' mill, on September 5, 1850. A few years afterwards the family removed to New Holland and he was reared and educated in the public schools here and at a military academy, in West Chester. When a young man he became associated with E. C. Diller in the mercantile business, under the firm name of Diller & Roland, in which he continued until about 1880, when he became a clerk in the New Holland National Bank. In a few years he was made assistant cashier, and later, when James Diller became president in 1904, after the death of the first president C. F. Roland, he became a cashier. The removal, by death of Mr. Diller, in 1908, led to his election as president of the bank, which position he held and filled with marked ability up to the time of his death. Mr. Roland was an active member of Trinity Lutheran church and was a vestryman since 1905. He was a member of Lodge No. 43 F. and A. M., of Lancaster, Chapter No. 43, of Lancaster, Lodge of Perfection and Consistory, of Philadelphia. He was also a charter member of New Holland Castle No. 157, K. G. E., and served as Keeper of Exchequer since its organization. On December 12, 1877, he was united in marriage with Miss Kate Hull of Lititz. Two sons were born to this happy union, Seeger, of Lancaster, and Ralph, of Philadelphia. Both these and their mother survive the deceased, and so also does one brother, John, of this boro, and two sisters, Mrs. E. D. Diller, of this boro, and Mrs. Theodore E. Kinzer, of Lancaster. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, with the chief service in Trinity Lutheran church at 2 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. S. M. Mountz. Lodge NO. 43 F. and A. M. attended in a body and conducted the service at the grave. Funeral Director J. C. Henninger was in charge."
