About George Sanderson

GEDCOM Note

Born on 26 Dec 1849 in South Leith, and christened on 10 Feb 1850,George ('Dosh') went to Royal High School. JJ Trotter, in hishistory 'The Royal High School',(Pitman, 1911, p.84) says -- 'withoutdoubt... the central figure at Holyrood Park in these days was GeorgeSanderson, a most genial cricketer who captained the side from 1876 to1882, and had many a good score to his credit. His early death in1833 was a great blow to the \club, which he had brought into suchgood repute for fine cricket and true sportsmanship.' He played forGentlemen of Edinburgh v Dafts XI [who they?] in 1880 and was anoffice-bearer in Scottish Cricket Union in 1881. His son GASanderson (Geoff) won four rugby caps, against England and Wales in1907 and against Ireland in 1907 and 1908.

  • Duncan Street, named after Admiral Duncan, victor at the navalbattle of Camperdown under Nelson in 1797 (dispatches from which werecarried by Admiral Oughton) changed name towards the end of thenineteenth century to Dundonald Street to prevent confusion withanother Duncan Street in Newington [see Charles B Boog-Watson,'History and Derivation of Edinburgh Street Names', EdinburghCorporation City Engineer's Department, Part I, p37] The street runsNorth from the West end of Drummond Place, down to Royal Crescent,(where I now live No. 9). George's parents and his youngestbrother Frederick Reid appear at 10 Duncan Street in the 1881 Census[Edinburgh, St Mary's, 285.2 77 2 --- Mark Sanderson, head, 71,Retired Wine Merchant, born in Leith: Cecilia, wife, mar., 62, ..bornin Trinity: Frederick R, son, 22, Commercial Cl+, born in Leith].

George and Davina (Vina) set up home nearby at 28 London Street, whichruns East from Drummond Place, and the 1881 Census [Edsinburgh, StMary's 685.1 128 16] shows those present to be George Sanderson,head, 31, Commercial Clerk +, born in Leith; Davina, wife, 27, bornin Rosslyn; Eleanora Ainslie, 29, farmer's daughter, born in Rosslyn:Catherine Harton, 18, general servant, born in Ireland.

A few doors away, in a larger dwelling in 36 London Street, on thecorner of Mansfield Place (where there is now a roundabout at the footof Broughton Street) the 1881 Census [Edinburgh 685.1 128 18]records James Sanderson, head, 40, Provision Merchant, born in SouthLeith: Mary, wife,31, born in Glasgow: Mary S, daughter, 7, scholar,born in South Leith: Cecilia, daughter, 5, born in South Leith:Ethel, daughter, 4, born in South Leith: Dora, 2, born in South Leith. James was third son of Mark and Cecilia Sanderson. [Don't know muchabout him yet]

Fettes Row, from where Angus Buchanan married Jane Sanderson, is justround the corner from Duncan St (now Dundonald St.) where Jane'sUncle George lived

A Mrs Sanderson lived round the corner at 28 Broughton Street. ?related.

George died on 2 Jan1885 after collapsing while curling at Roslin,leaving Vina a young widow aged about 30 with their two year old sonGeorge Alfred, born 9 Aug 1882.
