3 Oct 1841, issue of The Carolina Observer, Published in Fayetteville, N.C. and found at the North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh N.C. reads: "ANOTHER REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER GONE! 26th ult., at his residence in Stanly County NC --Rev. George Shankle aged 90 years. For the last forty years, he was a preacher of the M. E. Church."

Plyer and Plyer (1918) write: "The records of the Bureau of Pensions show that George Shankle served as a private eight months in the Revolutionary struggle. This was the year 1777, under three different Captains, John Randal, Isaac McLendon, and Buckner Kimbal. He also served as a minute man at various times from the beginning to the close of the Revolution. At the time of enlistment, he was a resident of Anson County (Montgomery County) North Carolina. The pension was allowed January 7, 1833."

George Shankle born about 1754 in North Carolina and dying Nov 1841 Stanley Co NC was a private in the service of North Carolina during the Revolutionary War. He is recognized by the DAR. His daughter Mary Polly Shankle who married Benjamin Ivy and his son Levi Shankle who married Sarah Ivey have female ancestors who are members of the DAR.
