Born near Marlborough, England on 9 July 1867, son of Reverend Charles Soames, he emigrated to Canada at the age of 21, arriving in Winnipeg in 1888. He worked for a year with the Manitoba Milling and Brewing Company then two years with a grain company. He then started a real estate business called Soames & McKinley. The partnership later dissolved and, in July 1905, was reorganized as Soames & Brydges.
In September 1892 he married Nora Ashe. They had one child. He was a member of the Winnipeg Board of Trade, the Winnipeg Real Estate Exchange, the Manitoba Club and the St. Charles Country Club. He died at Winnipeg on 14 April 1929.
