About George Sturgeon

George Sturgeon was born October 14, 1898 at Caradoc Indian Reservation, Munsey, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. His parents were Andrew Sturgeon and Sarah Sturgeon (birth name Williams). The doctor attending at his birth was Dr. Mitchell of the Muncey Indian Agency. (Ref: Declaration # 902583 of George's Uncle James Sturgeon, at the Village of Watford, Lambton County, August 8, 1941 - copy in GENI Media file for George Sturgeon). George's fiancee, Miss Nancy Shawanoo of Kettle Point Reserve, Forest, Ontario gave birth to a daughter (Gertrude Shawanoo or Shawano) in 1916. George undoubtedly was Gertrude's father since he assigned his military pay to Miss Nancy Shawanoo effective April 1, 1917 after he enrolled in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. (A copy of George's pay designation to Nancy is included in the GENI media file for George Sturgeon). That record documents his registration number as #845241 and notes his assignment to the 149th Batallion, his transfer on April 4, 1917 to 25th Reserve and further transfer on May 21, 1917 to the 161st Brigade before he sailed from Halifax to the war theatre in Europe.

On January 14, 1918, while George was in Europe, Nancy Shawano married John Mincoff. Mr. Mincoff took in Nancy's daughter Gertrude, thereafter named Gertrude Mincoff.

George's father, Andrew Sturgeon, was not interested in documenting his Potawatomi heritage so did not report the names of his young children to Wooster in 1907. (George was under age 10 at the time.) However, in 1919 when George was 21 his name and the name of his brother Andrew appear on the Chisholm Roll of Descendants of the Wisconsin Potawatomi living in Canada as residents of London, Ontario. See https://www.academia.edu/15722696/1919_Chisholm_Roll_of_Descendants...

After he returned to Canada from World War 1 George married Gertrude Ede.

George was interested in his Indigenous heritage and gave himself the self styled name "Chief Rain Cloud" although he was not a hereditary chief nor an elected chief. He also was interested in evangelical work and was photographed once in full head dress with Gospel Assembly Church leader Brother Sowders (copy at https://brotmjolly.weebly.com/photos.html) and another time in Kansas City, Missouri with his son Daniel Sturgeon and Gospel Assembly Church leader Brother Reva Mears (copies at https://brotmjolly.weebly.com/reva-mears.html and also at http://clarityiswonderful.blogspot.com/2009/12/reva-mears-bio.html ). Copies of those photos are in the GENI media file for George.

George died in Denver, Colorado in 1947.
