About George LaFayette Sutherlin
He was too young for military service during the Civil War, but he joined the Home Guard, dropped out of school to care for the home and dependent members of the family.
Born in Forney, Lafayette eventually moved across the state line into Polk County, Ga. and established his residence in the Mount Home area where he lived for more than fifty years. He had moved to Cave Springs a year before his death. A successful farmer, he looked on his vocation as a profession that afforded opportunities for the intelligent and scientific work. An ardent Baptist, Mr. Sutherlin helped reorganize the Mount Home Baptist Church, helped in succeeding building programs and served as Clerk until his death. He was an active source in establishing a school in the community.
