About George John James Towns
George was the last of the seven Australian Professional Sculler in the thirty years from 1876 to 1907, he originally won the title of World Champion in 1901, he was beaten in 1905 but won it back in 1906 .
He forfeited the title to his brother Charles in 1907 who lost it to NZer William Webb in August 1907.
In 1934 George ran the Parramatta River Professional Sculling Club from his boat building business in Wharf Road, Gladesville.
The business was the main supplier of sculling and rowing equipment to mso Sydney clubs and schools and continued until the late 1970's when it was taken over by the Carmody Brothers.
