About George Wheeler

Eldest son of William's second marriage. Baptised 28 April 1823 in St Nicholas' Warwick.

0n 1st May 1838 is apprenticed to Richard Henry Taylor, a wheelwright of St Nicholas, Warwick.

1841 is 15 and is with his father at Church Street, St Nicholas, Warwick with apprentice wheelwright as his trade. Youngest brother, Christopher is at Badsey with their Aunt Mary.

1845 married Sarah Jones in St Michaels Coventry on 26th January. He was a wheelwright. The relationship did not last long with a parting of the ways though no divorce and George waited until her death before marrying the woman he lived with

1851 is living in Coventry at Chantry Place, Holy Trinity. He is 28, listed as single, head of household that consists of a housekeeper, Lucy Mountford (31) and her mum Marthe (60), James Wright who is a watchmaker and Daniel Joaney, a wheelwright. His marriage to Sarah hasdgone wrong.

1861 He and Lucy are at 172 Heneagre[?] Street, Birmingham. He is a carpenter. They have Fred (9), George (6), Mary Ann(2) and John just 2m.

1871 they are living in Wolverton (no house or street given in census) and the children now number 6. He is recorded as 48, a coach maker and Lucy is said to be 46.

I have a certificate for his marriage in 1875 to Lucy Mountford: he is described as a widower. Yet his son George has a birth certificate saying his mother is Lucy Wheeler formerly Mountford. George is born in Court, Little Francis Street, Aston. It is most likely that his marriage to Sarah Jones was an impediment to marrying Lucy so he lived with her as a common law wife until the impediment was removed . Frederick may be the son of the first wife rather than Lucy.

1881 is 59, a coach maker living at 89 Church Street, Wolverton, Bucks. Sons John and Christopher are in the same work.

1891 is down as 67 and a railway coach builder. John is still with them doing the same thing.Lucy has married Charles Bush and a grand-daughter, Winifred, is with them too.

Death recorded as in Potterspury, Bucks in Q2 1894 aged 73. Ref 3b/12.h
