About George William Soltau
George William Soltau was the eldest son of the late Mr George Soltau of Plymouth, by Elizabeth Maria, daughter of Mr William Symons of Chaddlewood near Plympton. He was born on the 19th October 1801, and married in 1823 Frances Goddard, second daughter of the Rev. T Culme of Tothill, within the borough of Plymouth. Two years after her death, in 1862, he married Anne Catherine Emma, daughter of the late John Walmsley, of Ince Hall, Lancashire. She died on 25 April 1920.
He was a Justice of the Peace, and Deputy Lieutenant of Devonshire. He was Mayor of Plymouth in 1838-9, and again in 1841-2. He was involved in the management of the Devon and Cornwall Hospital and the Plymouth Orphan Asylum.
He resided at Little Efford, Plympton St Mary, which was a property inherited by his wife Frances Culme from her father. It had been in the Culme family since about 1662.
