George Washington "G.W." Wood was the son of George Wood Sr. and Winny "Winoia" (Lowry) Wood.

He was born in Warren County Kentucky 1824 and married Sarah Downey. He came with his wife, mother, and other siblings or family members to Laclede County, Missouri during 1856. They settled near the Oakland Community not far from present day Lebanon, Missouri.

He became a successful farmer. He and Sarah were the parents of several children.
