About Geraldine Chaplin
British actress Geraldine Leigh Chaplin is the daughter of silent screen star Charlie Chaplin.
Chaplin was born in Santa Monica, California, the fourth child of actor/director Charlie Chaplin, and the first of eight children with his fourth and last wife, Oona O'Neill (daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill and author Agnes Boulton). Chaplin was educated at a boarding school in Switzerland where she became fluent in French and Spanish, the former being standard in any Swiss school and the latter being demonstrated in some of her performances in films by the Spanish director Carlos Saura, her former partner, with whom she had a twelve-year relationship. She married a long time companion, Chilean cinematographer Patricio Castilla, in 2006 and has two children, Shane (b. 1974, by Saura) and Oona (b. 1986, by Castilla). She is also the half sister of Sydney Chaplin, Charles Chaplin, Jr. and Norman Chaplin. She lives much of her time in Miami, Florida at her home next to the beach.
When Chaplin was eight years old, she appeared uncredited in her father's film Limelight. When her dream of becoming a ballet dancer ended, she followed her father into the acting profession. David Lean chose her to play Tonya, the main character's devoted wife in his film Doctor Zhivago (1965). During the 1970s she appeared in several of Robert Altman's films. She also starred in nine movies directed by Carlos Saura, including Cría cuervos (1976), Elisa, vida mía (1977), and Mama Turns a Hundred (1979). She played the role of her grandmother Hannah Chaplin in the biographical film about her father, Chaplin.

Jeunesse & famille
Née à Santa Monica, Geraldine Leigh Chaplin, quatrième enfant de Charlie Chaplin, est l'aînée des huit enfants qu'il a eus avec sa quatrième et dernière femme, Oona O'Neill. À 8 ans, elle part en vacances en Europe avec sa famille mais l'administration Hoover en profite pour annuler le visa américain de Charlie Chaplin et sa famille. La famille erre d'hôtels en locations, puis s'installe dans le manoir de Ban.
Carrière
Dès 8 ans, Geraldine Chaplin commence à faire de la figuration dans les films de son père dont Les Feux de la rampe (Limelight, 1952), Un roi à New York (1957), et La Comtesse de Hong-Kong (1967).
Bonne danseuse classique, elle semble se destiner à cette carrière quand David Lean l'engage pour incarner l'épouse d’Omar Sharif dans Docteur Jivago : les critiques l'attendent au tournant, mais Geraldine Chaplin se révèle bonne comédienne (1965). Ce rôle lui vaut une nomination aux Golden Globes.
En 1967 Géraldine Chaplin rencontre le cinéaste espagnol Carlos Saura avec qui elle aura une fille, Shane Saura. Avec lui, elle tournera neuf films, de Peppermint frappé (1967) à Maman a cent ans (1979), en passant par Anna et les loups (1973) et Cria Cuervos (1976).
En 1981, elle est remarquée dans Les Uns et les autres de Claude Lelouch, où, lors de la grande scène finale, elle vocalise le Boléro de Maurice Ravel.
Dans Chaplin de Richard Attenborough (1992), consacré à son père, elle tient le rôle de sa propre grand-mère, Hannah Chaplin.
Tout au long de son brillant parcours, elle tourne aussi avec Richard Lester, Robert Altman, Alan Rudolph, Jacques Rivette, James Ivory, Michel Deville, Alain Resnais, Daniel Schmid, Martin Scorsese, Pedro Almodovar, Luca Guadagnino et Guy Maddin.
À partir de L'Orphelinat (2007), le cinéaste espagnol Juan Antonio Bayona en fait son actrice fétiche, et la rappelle pour The Impossible (2012), Quelques minutes après minuit (2016) et Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom (2018).
En 2011, elle est présidente du jury du 33e Festival de Moscou.
En 2013, elle incarne Coco Chanel dans The Return, un court métrage de mode réalisé par Karl Lagerfeld pour la maison Chanel.
