Also known as Gerrit or Gert or Geurt. Arrived at the Cape in South Africa in 1733 from Friesland as a sailor. Friesland is in the north of Holland, close to Germany, where he might have originated. Initially worked as a wagon driver for the V.O.C / Dutch East India Company,, then for various farmers as a servant between 1740 & 1756. He obtained citizenship in 1756 when he worked as a carpenter. The IGI confirms these details as per church member.

Posted by Chimichunga in Mundia ( Gee sy voornaam ook as Gerrit of Gerd Engelbrecht. So het Geurt Engelberts in Suid-Afrika beland. Hy word later transportryer en skrynwerker. In 1737 was hy 'n wadrywer, plaashandlanger vanaf 1740 tot 1756.

Stamvader in Suid-Afrika! In 1733 het hy as matroos vanaf Norden, Oos-Friesland. In 1737 is hy as wadrywer in VOL-diens.
