Gerhard Kritzinger (1955 - 2019)
Brief overview:
Gerhard (64), was shot dead in an attack in his home on a smallholding at Boschkop, outside Pretoria, on Tuesday evening 19th November 2019. Vreek's mother, Ansu de Villiers, 74, was hit with a firearm on the head and burned with boiling water, while Kritzinger's wife, Rina (64), hands were blue from being bound with electric cables.
Vreek said four men wearing balaclavas entered the house through an outside door in the Kritzingers' room at about 9pm on Tuesday. Rina was on her way to the room and bumped into them. She started screaming, after which Gerhard jumped up from the living room to investigate.
He was shot in the chest at a short distance, Vreken said.
Ansu was in her bedroom at this stage and also came out. She was threatened with a firearm.
"She told him, 'I tell you in the name of Jesus, you won't shoot me,'" Vrekken told. The attacker took the weapon away but still hit Ansu with the head with it.
She and Rina were both tied up with cables while the attackers looted the house.
One of the attackers demanded the key for the safe and was furious when he couldn't find it. He burned Ansu with boiling water on her right thigh and left ankle to force her to tell him where the safe was. However, the attacker was still unable to locate the key. The safe was empty anyway.
Ansu's husband, Toffie, died of cancer in June and the Kritzingers moved to the smallholding a few months ago.
Vreek said the attackers eventually fled on foot with only a television set, two cell phones and a few pieces of jewelry. They had previously dug a hole down below the electric fence to enter the premises.
She said the robbers threw the remaining cell phones and a civilian band radio into a toilet before they left. Her mother took out the radio - it still worked - and called for help like that.
Gerhard died at the scene and Ansu was rushed to Wilgers Hospital where she received stitches for the wound to her head and treatment for the burns. She has already been discharged.
Vreken said her mother, who can speak Sotho, spoke to the attackers in Sotho.
“My mother is calm. Her faith in the Lord is deeply rooted. ”
Capt. Gauteng police spokesman Mavela Masondo said no one had been arrested in connection with the incident.
