Gerhard (53), a consultant engineer was shot in the heart at his home in Nicolson Street in Brooklyn, Pretoria. He died shortly afterwards.
Prof. Margaret Slabbert (51), from the UP's department of visual arts, tried hard to hold back the tears as she recounted the scene that took place the night before around 10:00 pm. The Slabberts came back from their son's place where they had dropped off his car. "When we drove into the driveway of our house, a man was climbing over the wall," said Prof.Slabbert. “I was driving. My husband got out of the car and asked the man what he was looking for. When my husband him the second time asking what he was looking for, I saw the man take something out of his pocket. "It was a firearm. "Unfortunately, my husband realized this too late. The moment my husband realized what was happening, he tried to getting back into the car. "The guy shot him in the heart," she said.
