Gerhard C Toews

Our beloved father and grandfather, George C. Toews, was born at Greenland, Manitoba, to Cornelius and Aganetha Toews on November 15, 1905. He peacefully passed away on August 1, 1984, at the Ste. Anne Hospital. He reached the age of 78 years and 8 months.
He found his life's companion in Lena Teichroeb, and they were married at Winnipeg, Manitoba, on November 9, 1939. They shared joys and sorrows for forty-two years.
After the passing of his companion, even though he was lonely, he still took his responsibility as a father seriously in keeping his family together. After the death of our sister Violet, our parents took her two daughters, Eva and Cindy, into our home.
His boyhood and school days were spent in Greenland. In 1926 he and his brother Abe spent some time in Alberta. Later he found employment at various places. About the year of 1938 he moved to Eagle River, Ontario, where he took up a homestead. In 1943 they moved to Hudson, Ontario, where he worked for Patricia Transportation for six years. In 1949 they moved back to Greenland, where he spent the rest of his life. From his youth he enjoyed gardening and carpentry, which he worked at as long as his health permitted. His life was not a bed of roses, but he was not one to complain.
He enjoyed fair health until a few years ago. Since then he had been hospitalized many times. The time came when he needed full care. One of his nieces, Nettie Penner, took him into her home and lovingly cared for him until his last admittance to the hospital. Death was caused by complications due to old age.
During the last months of his life he earnestly sought the face of God, for which we are very thankful to our heavenly Father. He left the testimony that he was ready to meet his Maker and expressed his desire to go home.
Left to mourn are: three sons: Jim and wife Jean, and Carl and Elmer, at home; six daughters: Evelyn of Steinbach, Manitoba; Sarah of Winnipeg, Manitoba; Martha, Edna, Linda, and Gladys of the home; one son-in-law, Emery Tetreault of Steinbach, Manitoba; fourteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; five brothers: Frank and Emma; Abe and Lydia; Adolph; Harry and Margaret; and Emil and Elizabeth; four sisters: Mrs. Anna Toews; Agnes and Peter Wiebe; Elizabeth and Cornelius Doerksen; Mrs. Minnie Reimer; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and many relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; his wife, Lena; a daughter, Violet Tetreault; three children in infancy; one sister; and three brothers.
Funeral services were held on August 5, 1984, at the Greenland Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Ste. Anne, Manitoba. Ministers Ronald Wohlgemuth and Cornie Wiebe were in charge. Burial was in the Greenland Cemetery with Min. Myrle Wohlgemuth officiating.
