About Gerhard B. Toews
Messenger of Truth Vol. 63, No. 6, March 18, 1964:
Our beloved father, Gerhard B. Toews, was born in 1872, in Fishau, Russia, and died Feb. 16, 1964, at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 19 days.
His parents were Cornelius and Cornelia Toews. He with his parents came to America in 1875 when he was three years old, and settled in Gnadenau, in the spring of 1878. Three years later he and his parents moved 2 miles east of Hillsboro, Kansas.
He married Helena Hiebert on Dec. 22, 1898. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1958. Mother passed on to her reward on Sept. 17, 1960.
Father was baptized on Feb. 27, 1921 and united with the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite.
Father enjoyed his large family. We spent many pleasant hours together. His pleasant disposition won many friends far and near.
We sorrow father's passing, which seems so sudden, caused by a coronary thrombosis, trusting him into the hands of a just God.
He leaves to mourn five daughters and three sons: Anna Toews, Lydia Thye, Nellie Wiens, Albert Toews and Dave Toews, all of Hillsboro; Luella Funk of Shafter, Calif., Viola Pauls of McPherson and Geovennia Toews of Inman; eighteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces and many friends-The Family.
Funeral services were held in the Alexanderfeld Church on Feb. 19, 1964. Min. Jona Dyck made introductory remarks from Prov. 3:5, 6, and prayer. Min. Claude Unruh spoke from John 14:6; Heb. 9: 27, 28; Isa. 61:10. Min. Elmer Sommers spoke a few words at the grave from Job 14:14.
Interment was in the nearby cemetery.
