Brief overview:

Gerhard (65), was shot 4 times, outside his butchery on his smallholding in Brits, on 14th December 2012. His son Gerhardus Jacobus Rudolph "Gerrie" (31), was shot 6 times. The father of three daughters, and was taken to the ER at a Pretoria hospital. Gerrie died in hospital on 28th December due to his injuries. His brother De Beer (14), watched the chain of events happen through a window, when four gunmen invaded Geluk Butchery Superette.

De Beer and Rudolph Botha (11), his sister Elize Steenkamp's child, were sitting in the office playing computer games when they heard the shots. The attackers jumped into Gerhard pick-up truck and drove away, but it ran out of fuel. They then escaped in a silver Toyota Corolla.
