Gert Hitzeroth (1964 - 2018)

Brief overview:

Gert (54), was beaten with a baseball bat, then drowned in a swimming pool at a house in Mayberry Park, Alberton on 19th May 2018. It is not clear whether it was the beating with the bat or drowning that caused Gert’s death at the home of a newly acquainted friend.

According to Gert's son Wayne, his father went out to a restaurant for drinks with three family members. They met a man there who invited them back to his house for drinks. It appears an argument ensued, and a fight broke out. The man went inside his house and came back out with the bat.

“I was told that he hit my dad over the head several times and that there was a lot of blood. According to my family members, the man then proceeded to drag my father to his swimming pool and pushed him under the water several times,” Wayne said.

  • Brackendowns SAPS confirmed that a suspect was arrested in the early hours of May 20 and that a case of murder is being investigated.

  • Two suspects were arrested, and appeared in court on 28th May. The male suspect, aged 39, was charged with murder. A female suspect, aged 37, was later arrested on charges of defeating the ends of justice. This was converted to a murder charge. They were released on bail of R15 000 and R5 000 respectively.
  • After the bail application, the trial continued on September 21st 2018, and the case was postponed to November 15th, so that blood and DNA tests could be completed. On November 15th 2018, the case was withdrawn.
