She is in the 1910 census, living on South St, Bridgewater, Ma, with her father, mother and sister Dorothy. Her father was an edgesetter at a shoe factory. Her mother reports that she had 6 children, of which all 6 were still living.

In the 1920 census, she is living on Wendell Ave., in Brockton, with her mother & stepfather, Henry Diamond, sister Dorothy & brother William. At 14, Gertrude was a "dresser" in a shoe factory!

In the 1930 census, she is married to John Spillane, living on Douglas Ave, still in Brockton, Ma. She is working in a shoe factory, and her husband is a manager at a service station.
