- Nederduits Gereformeerde Gemeente (NGK), Tulbagh, Western Cape. marriage register, 1744-1839, page 7, entry no 13. Repository: NG Kerkargief, Noordwal-Wes, Stellenbosch, G4 9/1. on

Gesina was the second wife of Jan Labuschagne. When she married him in 1739 she was 16 years old, and he had 3 young children aged 7, 5 and 3 . She then had 5 children between 1739 and 1753 when Jan Labuschagne died - ages 13, 7, 4, 3 and 1. The oldest daughter of Jan Labuschagne was 21 and married in 1754, a month before Gesina married Jan Nel on 29.12.1754. Gesina was about 31 years old. The second Labuschagne daughter, Anna, married in 1764 which means that she was perhaps available to help with the extended family for 10 years after her father died. Gesina then had a further 6 children after she married Jan Nel - between 1756 to 1767. She was the 6th child in a very large family - her father had 14 children, the youngest baptised on 22nd March 1739, - the same year she married for the first time. As a 16 year old she will have been helping her mother look after a very large family. [Source?]

The Four Gesinas:

Briefly: Jan Steenkamp (c 1680) marries Gesina "Gijsie" Visser (1686) & has a daughter, Gesina "Gijsie" Steenkamp (1718). His wife dies, & perhaps his daughter too. He remarries Johanna van Eck (c 1705) & has another daughter, Gesina "Geesje" Steenkamp (1723). For various reasons it seems more likely that it is this 1723 daughter who married Jan Nel & gave birth to Gesina Nel (1758), rather than her 1718 half sister. However, we can't be sure of this without more documentation.
