About Gilbert Corner
Gilbert was christened by his parents on 3 April 1825 at Chester-le-Street, Durham, England. In the 1841 census he was the lone Corner family member in a large household in Biddick, North, Washington Parish of Durham, as follows:
John Mawsdon, M, 5-39, Durham/ Elenor Mawsdon,F, 35-39, Durham/ Thomas Mawsdon, M, 12, Durham/ John Mawsdon, M, 10, Durham/ George Mawsdon, M, 5, Durham/ Mary Thompson, F, 80-84, Durham/ Sarah Reed, F, 7, Durham/ William Place, M,22-26,Durham/ Gilbert Corner,M,17-21,Durham/ Elizabeth Homes,F,15-19,Durham/ William Rea,M, 35-39, Durham/ Francis Rea,F, 35-39, Durham/ John Rea, M, 12, Durham/
Possibilities are he was boarding while he worked a colliery locally. Another is these were somehow family members, for example a Corner daughter may have married a Mawsdon, but checking off all marriages for the surnames listed with Corner females discounts this.
He married also in Chester-Le-Street in 1844 at twenty years old, and died three years later, so a brief union. Because of this there is little documentation to check and in combination, at this time wedding records were recorded in groups of up to four. This means that they are now pretty much inseparable and it's hard to figure out who the spouses actually were. In this case Gilbert probably married a Jane; Jane Brunton or Jane Hutchinson. An Anne Beard is also listed however there's no further records for the latter in Durham so she's likely ruled out as being his wife.
