About Gilbert Monroe Davidson

The family history of his Davidson name is said to be of the Welsh, Dafydaw (pronounced like David-ow), although the genealogy suggests differently.

The Almighty does not make men anymore like he made Gilbert Monroe Davidson. From the drought stricken dust pits of Oklahoma's panhandle to the jungles of the Pacific Theater, Gilbert's life was one of hard work and service to the country he fought for. He taught himself to be a welder, machinist-mechanic, and a carpenter. Time off for Gilbert meant a week hunting in Idaho so he could fill his families freezer with meat for the winter. A handmade flagpole of his still stands for Old Glory to wave from at the Burney sawmill where he worked as a millwright. He passed away while hunting, and the void created in our family could never be filled so we all drifted away from the home he made with his own hands.

"Jungleer" of the Sunrise Division. A bazookaman, decorated with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star earned for seizing an enemies machine gun nest. He went to his grave with shrapnel still in his body from a Japanese grenade.

Lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5689 of Burney.

Member of the Flat Earth Society.

On the most special of holidays, my brother, mother and myself would get into a pale yellow '64 Buick Special and drive up to Round Mountain for the great family get-togethers. These gatherings meant good food and chores. Grandpa Dave always used handkerchiefs, and I was sometimes tasked with the duty of folding them after the dryer had tumbled the moisture out. They were first folded across the middle, then into quarters, and then piled on to an orderly stack. The handkerchiefs, simple and without a monogram, ended up in a drawer solely committed for their keeping. OBITUARY October 19, 1983 "Record Searchlight" Redding, California Graveside services for Gilbert Monroe Davidson, 65, of Round Mountain will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Halcumb Cemetery. Officials of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5689 in Burney will officiate. Mr. Davidson died Thursday in Grangeville, Idaho. Born on October 5, 1918 in Freedom, Oklahoma, Mr. Davidson moved to Shasta County in 1946. He had been a mechanic and welder for 49 years. He was a World War II Army veteran and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5689. He is survived by his wife, Madeleine, of the home; daughters, Beverly Sullivan of Burney, Lorrie Davidson of Round Mountain, and Grace Davidson of Hayfork; sisters, Belle McCormick and Eva West, both of Bella Vista, and Hazel Davidson of Fresno; and seven grandchildren. Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jul 29 2019, 22:34:06 UTC
