Gilbert was born at Umzinto. On 2 August 1904 he married Mary Nunn in Bulwer. He farmed New Biggin in the Underberg area. In June of 1902 L. Nicholoson, MLA, sent a petition from the residents of the Polela district for the appointment of Gilbert as a Justice of the Peace. Their petition was successful and Gilbert was sworn in on 13 August 1902. In 1907 Gilbert was appointed the Forest Guide in Ipolela. In about 1920 he bought the farm Cloverton in the Creighton area. He also bought Ambleside from his brother Arthur. Gilbert died in 1926 and appointed his brother McIntyre and nephew Richard, jnr, of Kingscotte, as executors of his estate. After Gilbert's death Mary lived with her son Vernon on the farm Cloverton in the Creighton area.
