About Gladyce Burnice Romain

CHESTER, Mont. -- Gladyce Burnice Romain, 81, a Grangeville homemaker, died of complications of emphysema Wednesday November 12, 1997 at Missouri River Manor here.

She had been a resident of the nursing home since Nov. 4. Although she and her husband, Bernard (Bud) Romain, maintained a home in Grangeville, they spent much time in Montana, where her children live.

She was born March 4, 1916, in Joplin, Mont., to Benhard and Julia Lintvet Brandvold. She was salutatorian of the Joplin High School class of 1934.

She moved to Spokane in search of employment, but returned to Joplin to help her father with the younger children when her mother died in 1936.

She married Robert James Wright in 1938 and they made their home in Chester. The marriage ended in divorce.

In 1948, she began working as a clerk in the county treasurer's office and was appointed Liberty County treasurer in 1953. She served in that position until 1959. In 1960, she also began working for the O'Brien Insurance Agency and also served as deputy clerk of the court until 1963.

She returned to Spokane in 1963 and continued working in the insurance business.

She married Romain in Coeur d'Alene Dec. 6, 1965, and they made their home on the Romain farm south of Chester for several years. He retired in 1971 and they purchased a home in Grangeville.

She was a charter member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester. She also was a 50-year member of the Royal Neighbors of America and a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, sewing and ceramics. She collected figurines, pottery and crystal and she enjoyed traveling. She was noted for her cooking and enjoyed canning and baking. She also liked to read and spend time in her rose garden.

Survivors include her husband at their home in Grangeville; a son, Robert (Speed) Wright of Great Falls, Mont.; a daughter, Beverly Nealy of Billings, Mont.; five grandchildren; four great-grandsons; a brother, Kenneth Brandvold of Great Falls; and three sisters, Betty Krejci of Chester, Helen Henderson of Sun City, Ariz., and Doris Austin of Forest, Miss.

Three brothers, Donald, Leonard and Benny Brandvold, died previously.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chester. A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Manchester Cemetery northwest of Great Falls.
